Volunteer with the trust

A small list of small jobs. None of them takes very many hours; all of them matter.

We are not a large charity, and we will not pretend to need many hands. But a parish trust this small leans on a handful of friends — to walk a footpath, to check a hedge, to read a paper file. If one of the roles below fits your week, we would be glad to hear from you.

A pair of hands marking up the parish footpath map in the village hall at Bishop's Frome.

Volunteering with the consolidated charities is small-scale, occasional, and parish-bound. You will not run a service or speak to many strangers. You will read, walk, count, witness, and sometimes carry. We will not ask you for a CV. We will ask you for a referee in the parish and we will take up that reference by post.

Below is the full list of roles we are quietly recruiting for in 2026. There is no rolling intake; we approach each role separately, and we take applications by post and by email at the times marked.

Open roles · 2026

Five small roles, none of them paid, all of them parish-only.

01 · Quarterly

Poor's Land hedge-walker

Walk the meadow boundary once a quarter, note the state of the hedge, and post us a single side of A5. About one hour, four times a year. Boots required, dog optional.

Commitment: ~4 hours / year.
Location: Bishop's Frome.
Team lead: The trustee on duty that quarter.

02 · Annual, November

Fuel-grant deliverer

Help carry sealed envelopes from the trustees' door to a handful of households on the parish electoral roll, the second week of November. A walk of about two miles, by daylight, in good company.

Commitment: ~3 hours / year.
Location: The village core and Halmond's Frome lane.
Team lead: A trustee.

03 · Quarterly

Independent examiner

If you are a parishioner with a background in book-keeping or accountancy, we are always glad of an independent examiner to look over the receipts-and-payments accounts at the financial year-end.

Commitment: ~6 hours / year, mostly in February.
Location: Bishop's Frome (and your own kitchen table).
Team lead: The honorary treasurer.

04 · Occasional

Coffee-morning steward

Help set out chairs, run the urn, and keep the honesty jar tidy at the summer coffee morning at the village hall. One Saturday morning a year, with cake.

Commitment: ~3 hours / year.
Location: Bishop's Frome Village Hall.
Team lead: The trustee on duty that quarter.

05 · Annual

Hop Sunday walk-leader

Walk the Frome towpath in mid-September with a small group, point out the hop yards, and remind everyone where the stile is. We supply the map. You supply the patience.

Commitment: ~3 hours / year.
Location: From the lych gate, along the Frome, and back.
Team lead: A trustee.

06 · One off

Parish-history file reader

If you have written or curated a local history project — a parish magazine archive, a wedding-register transcription, an oral-history recording — we welcome a short visit to compare notes against our minute-books.

Commitment: a single afternoon.
Location: Bishop's Frome.
Team lead: The chair.

Volunteer enquiry

Tell us which role, in your own words.

We read every enquiry by hand. A trustee will reply within five working days. There is no application form — write to us in plain English about which role interests you and why.
